A Word for the Week…

The Discovery Charter School word this week is Caring — showing true respect and affection for all in your circle of life.

“Take care of yourself, take care of your friends,

Take great care of each other and the circle never ends”

Take Care of Yourself, Songs From TheWishingstone

The Discovery family is now a month old, and we continue to define ourselves and breathe life to our vision each day.  Two hundred students,  twenty advisors, support staff and governing board members, and another eight hundred plus family members and friends bring our shared family to a thousand or more people in the Discovery Charter School circle of caring and learning.  We share a commitment to make each other’s life better.

This is a great time to reflect on our daily interactions, and ensure that we do take care of each other.  Our key relationships start in our classrooms and on our playgrounds, where we must require respect in all interactions.  I have been on  playgrounds for close to Fifty years now, and I have seen the early stages of play in early grades, turn to rough play, and the inclusion of teasing, first to be funny, and then with hurtful intentions. I have seen that grow more intense and hurtful as  students move on through school.   What we accepted in schools as rough play and teasing, has grown into the evil phenomenon that we see today as bullying.   It is not only in our schools, but in the world around us as well.    As a staff, and directly  influenced by the leadership of our Governing Board, I can promise that the Discovery Charter School has as its basic premise the guarantee of individualdignity for everyone in our family.   We need to teach, model, and expect safe play, and  caring in all of our interactions, in school and on our playgrounds. A great rule is to “Keep your hands, feet, and unkind words to yourself.”  As adults we need to listen closely to each other, value each other’s opinions, answer each other’s questions, and respect each other’s ideas.  More importantly we must truly care for everyone in our circle.  We are unique, we are the Discovery Charter School Family!
