Through the Telescope…Vol. 27

Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world.  For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.”   –Margaret Mead

Together We Can Make a Difference

The Discovery Charter School features teachers, students and families who all work hard each day to truly make a difference in the lives of others.  This poem, now the lyrics of a song, is written as a gift to all those who are dedicated to the process of always learning, always teaching and always caring.

TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The story starts with beaches; Where the ocean meets the sand,

We see two children running; With starfish in their hands

Busy, busy, back and forth; Moving up the shore

Tossing starfish in the ocean; Then running back for more

I’ll make your life better; And you do the same for mine

Together we’ll make a difference; One challenge at a time

You give life to my dreams; And I’ll do the same for you

Together we’ll make a difference; In making dreams come true

They can change the world; Throwing starfish in the sea

Allowing them to live again; To travel and be free

The children have a purpose; Their message has a rhyme

They reach out to make a difference; One starfish at a time

I’ll make your life better; And you do the same for mine

Together we’ll make a difference; One challenge at a time

You give life to my dreams; And I’ll do the same for you

Together we’ll make a difference; In making dreams come true

Life is like the ocean; With many tossed up on the beach

Waiting there with outstretched hands; Right within our reach

Alone we can make it better; Together even more

Changing the lives of others; Like the starfish on the shore

I’ll make your life better; And you do the same for mine

Together we’ll make a difference; One challenge at a time

You give life to my dreams; And I’ll do the same for you

Together we’ll make a difference; In making dreams come true

This song summarizes the task that we must each set for ourselves in high priority each day.  The words in the chorus spell out clearly the empowerment of self that comes from giving to others and the world around us.  We must realize that whether it is love, power, knowledge, caring, safety, or the gift of friendship, we each truly make a difference. The concept of empowering ourselves, by giving to others fits well with the holiday season.  We trust that the song reminds you that we are gifts in the lives of others, particularly with our families, friends, and those with whom we share each day.    ~Dr. Price

CREATE A CARING CIRCLE

Please take time in each of your lives to be a link in a circle of care.  As we share this experience called School, we have many, many opportunities each day to care for each other. There are so many rough edges in the world around us that our caring becomes a vital task to help us make sense of a confusing world.  If each of us cares for the people around us, it joins us in a circle of caring that is powerful enough to make school better, safer, and a more enjoyable learning experience.  It all starts with pride and taking care of yourself and understanding the responsibility you have to bring life to your caring circle.  The following words from the Wishingstone Song, Take Care Of Yourself, describe the caring circle that softens our hope for the role of schools in our world.

“Take care of yourself; Take care of your friends

Take great care of each other;  And the circle never ends!”

We thank you all for caring for the Discovery Charter School and for being links in many caring circles that keep our vision  safe and alive with learning.  ~Dr. Price
